Our Mission

Steps for the Future is devoted to developing human potential. Our mission is to help all people create innovated solutions and make informed choices which will improve and enrich their lives. We motivate and encourage all our members to achieve their personal and professional fulfilment. We believe that together we bring out the best in each of us, enriching us all.

The star of the Charity and the shows, this is Maggie (who is the CEO) without whom any of Steps would be possible.  Her drive and enthusiasm is inexhaustible - Round of applause for Maggie, who probably never gets the credit she deserves, but the students love her and she is so committed.  She may complain from time to time, but she is really just "managing", and very good at it she is too.

Our Philosophy

We cannot state our philosophy any better than the great man himself, Carl Rogers, who pioneered the 'Person Centred Approach' to working with people. These words we hope endorse the Steps for the Future approach to working with all who we come into contact with. The 'Person Centred Approach' gives dignity and respect to all.

"You know that I don't believe that anyone has ever taught anything to anyone. I question that efficacy of teaching. The only thing that I know is that anyone who wants to learn, will learn."
Carl Rogers

"Empathy - to lay aside your own views and values in order to enter another's world without prejudice."
Carl Rogers

"When I have been listened to, and when I have been heard, I am able to re-perceive my world and go on."
Carl Rogers

"Can Steps for the Future change a person? - No!! - only that person can change that person."
Steps for the Future

Where Did We Start?

Steps For The Future started at the Padley Development Centre in Derby. It was originally a dance class on a Friday morning, but the enthusiasm and talent of the students encouraged us to "Go For It" and so we created 'Steps For The Future - The Performing Arts Academy for Adults with Differences'.

Where are we now?

We now have three Performing Arts classes, Dance on Mondays from 10am until 3pm at Alice Street Community Centre in Derby city centre, Drama on Wednesdays from 10am until 1pm at Alice Street Community Centre [Note that the Drama class is temporarily closed] and a Music class which is on Fridays from 10am until 1pm also at the Alice Street Community Centre.

We also perform regularly in public and have been seen at the Assembly Rooms, The University of Derby, Derby Theatre, Deda dance centre, The Westfield (Intu) Centre, Derby Cathedral, International Women's Day (Derby Market place) and many other places to the delight and enjoyment of our audiences.

In August 2016 Steps moved into their own premises on Nottingham Road - a major breakthrough for the Charity!
A couple of pictures of the new office are shown below:-
